Argentina Named Master Of The Flame in Global Cook-Off

With the culinary pride of nations worldwide at ‘steak’, Sydney’s top chefs stepped up to the hot plate today at Cargo Bar, King St Wharf to show off the barbecue styles and traditions of their respective motherlands and settle the age old debate of which country is home to the world’s best barbie.

In celebration of National BBQ Day, Sydneysiders were treated to a round-the-world tour of the different live fire cooking styles and traditions of multicultural Australians from across the globe by some of Sydney’s best-known chefs.

The BeefEater World Cup featured the traditional outdoor cooking styles of six countries represented by some of Sydney’s hottest restaurants for foreign cuisine:

Argentina - Bodega - Adan Abrahanowicz
Australia - Hugo’s - Peter Evans
France - Restaurant Balzac
Italy - Matthew Kemp
Korea - The Beresford Hotel - Danny Russo
USA - The American Club - Markus Pekert

A panel of esteemed food industry representatives including Andy Harris, Editor of Gourmet Traveller; Robert Goldman, President of the Restaurant & Catering Association NSW, Joanna Savill, renowned food journalist and television presenter and Peter Woodland, Managing Director of BeefEater crowned the winning country.

Adan Abrahanowicz from Bodega stoked the flames of Argentina’s national pride in their traditional barbecuing technique by claiming the ‘Gold Spatula’ at the inaugural BeefEater BBQ World Cup with a traditional Parrillada that included Blood Sausage, Chorizo, Short Ribs and Sweet Bread.
“I am very happy to have won the BeefEater BBQ World Cup because barbecuing represents a big part of Argentinean culture,” says Abrahanowicz. “The great meat available in Australia cooked in the Argentinean style of Parrillada was a winning formula.”

City workers gathered along the promenade of Cargo Bar to cheer on their nation and sample exotic barbecue recipes drawn from nearly every continent, from American style ribs… to figs wrapped with pancetta… to a Korean Kalbi BBQ whilst those feeling less adventurous enjoyed gourmet bacon and egg rolls fresh off the fire. Multicultural entertainers from Korean Drummers to Tango Dancers were also on hand to fire up the crowd.

“We are proud at BeefEater to be able to bring together some of Australia’s best chefs to celebrate the cultural diversity of Australia and how this multiculturalism has impacted on our national cuisine,” says Peter Woodland, Managing Director of BeefEater. “National Barbecue Day was first established by BeefEater in 2001 as a way of bringing families and mates together to celebrate one of Australia’s greatest traditions.”
